It is known from various sources that Makim Uddin came to Hajiganj from Arab countries in early 11th century to spread Islam. After his name this place was later named Mokimabad. The name of the last man of his family, Haji Moniruddin, evolved into the name of this region, "Hajiganj". His great-grandson Haji Ahmad Ali Patwari (RA) established the Hajiganj Grand Mosque. At that time the mosque was a thatched building. On 17th Ashwin 1337, Abul Farah Jainpuri (RA) laid the foundation stone of the Panka Masjid. After the construction work was completed, the first Friday prayer was offered in this mosque on 10 Agrahayan 1344. Sher Bangla AK Fazlul Haq, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy and others were present in that prayer.
